Of all our bloggers, I am probably the oldest, but I don’t feel my age. I was born in 1952, just a couple of blocks from the Santa Fe Railway’s main transcontinental line in Clovis, New Mexico to an airline father, so transportation (planes and trains) got in my blood at an early age. As a child, my fondest memories are spending days at work with my dad on the ramp in Amarillo, Texas and on the old observation deck at Dallas Love Field. After graduating from Southern Methodist University in Dallas as a journalism major, I got my first airline job with Delta in 1976. During my time at Delta, I worked at Dallas/Fort Worth (during three separate occasions), Detroit, Oakland, Atlanta (at the old terminal), Portland, Oregon, Paris Orly, and Dayton, Ohio. My 18½ years with Delta were split between ramp/operations and ticket counter/gates.

I joined Southwest (thankfully!) in 1995, as a Reservations Sales Agent, but most of the time I have been in the communications group in the Executive Office. I correspond with our Customers on a wide variety of topics, but I also get to work on different projects like this blog. My duties also include proofing press releases, departmental newsletters, and proofing our Employee magazine, LUVLines. In addition, I am a freelance author for Airways magazine. (Yeah, transportation really is in my blood.)

  Help Me Decide

How about as the Statue of Liberty. She can take it; she's a harbor chick! Or to celebrate the codeshare with WestJet, why not go as a lumberjack because 'they're okay."

I can’t believe it.  Summer is almost over, and Halloween is just around the corner.  This will be my fifth Halloween as Southwest’s CEO, and little did I know what kind of impact my costumes would have.  In 2004, I portrayed mega-rock star, Gene Simmons of KISS, [asset|

All Cowed-up and Ready to Go

I think those cows were in a fowl humor.

One of the things I love most about working for Southwest is that you can never really anticipate what exactly you’ll be doing from day to day.[a

  08.08.08

My earliest Olympic memories are of the 1968 Olympics from Mexico City and of Bob Toomey winning the decathalon. Unfortunately, I think the television networks have ruined a lot of the sponteneity of the events.

As a kid, I hated the summer Olympics. We had five television channels, and every single one of them showed the Olympics for three weeks straight. No Smurfs. No Looney Tunes. No Mr. Roger's Neighborhood. Just a bunch of boring adults doing boring things like running and swimming. I did those things every day and didn't understand why it was such a big deal to watch other people doing it.

  Competition Brings Out the Best

Jeff, your post brought back memories of high school and the feeling of embarrassment I felt when several buddies and I bought a big giant pack of toilet paper at K-Mart on a Friday night. I think everyone in the world knew what we were about. Brian

At Southwest Airlines, we just completed an Employee survey.  Like most surveys, this one only takes a few minutes and provides a valuable platform to solicit real time opinions across our system.  In Dallas, a friend of mine in Finance thought it would be FUN to get a little competition going between our Departments.  We made a bet on which Department would have the greatest participation

  "My Heroes"

Jim that sounds like an incredibly rewarding time. Congratulations to you and everyone who participates. Brian

I suppose most of us have a hero or heroes of some sort, people who make a positive impact and inspire us—sports figures, actors, musicians, teachers, family members…the list goes on.  I have heroes in every category listed above, but I hold a special place in my heart for a group of children and teenagers I know who are truly braver and stronger than anyone I've ever met.
